Mehrangarh Fort Jodhpur

Mehrangarh Fort – Jodhpur's Fortress on the Rock

Mehrangarh Fort rises on a sheer rock about 120 metres above Jodhpur, the "Blue City" of Rajasthan. It is one of the largest and most impressive forts in India, and from its walls you look down on a sea of blue houses spreading to the edge of the Thar Desert.

History:
The fort was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, chief of the Rathore clan, who moved his capital here and gave his name to the city. Over five centuries his successors strengthened the walls and filled the fort with palaces. Mehrangarh is still owned by the royal family of Jodhpur and is run as a museum by their trust.

What to see:

  1. The seven gates (pols) on the way up, including Jai Pol, built after a victory over Jaipur and Bikaner, and Loha Pol, with the handprints of royal widows who committed sati.
  2. Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace), the hall of private audience.
  3. Phool Mahal (Flower Palace), richly painted and gilded, used for royal celebrations.
  4. Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace), decorated with mirror work.
  5. The museum with royal palanquins, elephant howdahs, cradles, weapons, costumes and miniature paintings.
  6. The ramparts, lined with old cannons and offering the classic view over the blue city.

Good to know:
There is a lift for part of the climb. The audio guide is excellent. Nearby is Jaswant Thada, a white marble royal memorial, which is usually visited together with the fort. Allow two to three hours.
